Triumph Spitfire Gearbox & Gearbox/Overdrive Units
WHICH MODELS WERE FITTED WITH 3-RAIL TYPE GEARBOXES?
The term '3-rail' refers to the fact that this type of gearbox had 3 selector rails (in this case in a separate housing bolted to the top of the gearbox). 3-rail gearboxes were fitted to ALL Spitfire MK1, MK2, MK3 & MKIV models. However, because the Spitfire 1500 was introduced into the USA earlier than the UK and other European countries some early USA Specification Spitfire 1500's were also fitted with the 3-rail type gearbox (it is possible that some of these were re-imported into the UK).
3 SYNCHRO' GEARBOXES
Original Spitfire MK1, MK2 & MK3 gearboxes only had synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears, and had a square drive flange. Only 'D'Type overdrive was fitted.
4 Synchro Gearboxes
Spitfire MKIV Gearboxes had synchromesh on all four forward gears and a round drive flange. 'D' & 'J' type overdrives where fitted.
Reconditioned exchange units are supplied less clutch bellhousing, speedo pinion/housing, gear lever, top cover extension & ancillaries.
