Range Rover Classic Steering Box
Steering Box Identification
Manual Steering
Early (18.2:1 ratio) manual steering boxes have four screws securing the top cover plate; backlash adjustment is by a square-headed screw & locknut.
Later manual steering boxes either have a cast alloy top cover, backlash adjustment being by a slotted screw & locknut, or steel plate top cover, secured by two screws, with a further plate - secured by three screws - under which shims are added or subtracted to give backlash adjustment.
Note: early (18.2:1 ratio) steering boxes are no longer available. Instead, fit the later type steering box, along with lower steering shaft, part no. NTC8478.
Power Steering
Power steering boxes are either Adwest lightweight or Adwest heavyweight.
Adwest lightweight have four screws securing the top cover and Adwest heavyweight have three.
