Discovery 1 V8 Oil Pump

Oil Pump & Timing Cover
There are two types of oil pump for the V8 engine fitted to the Discovery. The first was fitted from 1989 to VIN LA (approx. March 1994) and is a camshaft-driven oil pump, incorporated into the lower right hand of the timing cover, with a removable housing for the relief valve and oil filter.
From VIN MA (April 1994), the oil pump was changed to a crank-driven type, incorporated into a redesigned timing cover without the need for a separate relief valve housing. The two types are not easily interchangeable, as the later design requires a longer crankshaft nose to accommodate the oil pump gears.
