SU Carburettors
It is quite straightforward (with the help of a workshop manual) to service and overhaul your own carburettors using the service items listed in this section.
Both fuel economy and performance can suffer through lack of carburettor maintenance and with the recent tightening of the MOT regulations regarding ‘Exhaust Emission’, it is important that they are properly maintained in good working order.
Incorrectly adjusted or worn carb’s (as well as poorly maintained ignition systems) can also cause premature engine wear, because unburned fuel that remains in the cylinders causes ‘bore-wash;’ which eventually glazes the bores, resulting in excessive oil consumption.
The carburettor listings here are primarily for identification purposes, they will also show if you have the correct carb(s) fitted, part numbers/ engine numbers are quoted to help identify original factory specification, and relate to carb’s fitted when the vehicle was new and not subsequent replacement.
To check, the carb(s) can be positively identified by a silver tag which is usually located on the float chamber and is marked with the part number, IE: AUD604F.
Having identified your carb(s), all you need do is then refer to the corresponding carburettor components/kits.

Unleaded Fuel. Unless you are using an additive, then to convert your 2.5Pi to run on unleaded fuel you will need to fit a replacement metering unit, Bosch pump and reconditioned head with special valve seats & guides.

A replacement K & N filter for the standard air filter is available for certain models (See Air Filter - Standard).
There are 3 options for K&N filters for 2.5Pi. Firstly a direct replacement for the standard air filter that fits inside the canister, a cone filter that replaces the existing air cleaner canister, or individual filter housings, for each of the 3 intake manifolds. The ‘triple’ filter option proves popular for TR6 owners since it not only relieves the engine bay of all the clutter (intake hoses, trunking & air cleaner), but also adds a pleasing intake noise.
