Introduction Front Axle The Range Rover's front axle is an extremely rugged beam axle design, comprising a one-piece steel tube with a separate cast steel differential housing. All of the component parts of the axle, such as the differential assembly, halfshafts and C.V. joints, can be removed and replaced with the axle in situ. It is rare for a Range Rover to require a complete replacement axle and for this reason we have avoided listing full axle assemblies. Nevertheless, if you should require a complete unit, please contact our sales department for price & availability (remembering to quote the year and VIN number of your vehicle, along with the serial number of the axle). D.I.Y. overhaul of the differential assembly is not really viable, due to the specialist tools and skills required, so we list complete differential assemblies. Serial Number The serial number of the front axle is stamped on the front or top of the axle casing, on the left hand side (roughly in line with the axle breather). Serial numbers comprise a 3-figure code, identifying the axle type, followed by the serial number and then a suffix letter (A, B or C). The final drive ratio for all models is 3.54:1. Important - ABS ABS was introduced in 1990 (VIN GA), necessitating some changes to the front halfshafts and C.V joints. In order to simplify this complicated area, we have divided the relevant parts into two categories: non-ABS vehicles and ABS-equipped vehicles. It is important to bear this in mind when ordering parts, due to the safety-critical nature of ABS-related components.

NOTE: Some vehicles - including Non-ABS vehicles from 1992 and vehicles fitted with ABS from 1990 - feature a different design of halfshaft assembly to that used on earlier vehicles. This later type of halfshaft assembly features a combined C.V. joint and driveshaft with separate outer hub, instead of the previous arrangement of separate C.V. joint and combined outer hub/driveshaft (also known as the driving member) assembly. These vehicles can most easily be identified by removing the outer hub (driving member) to see whether it incorporates a driveshaft. An outer hub driving member) that is splined but with no driveshaft indicates the later halfshaft design, as described above.
