In this 'V8' Performance section we have listed the parts and components that will increase the power output of the 3.5 (& 3.9) V8, which even in its standard form produces substantial horsepower and torque.
It would be quite easy to get carried away with this exciting project, but you would probably end up with a 'flame-spitting' full race specification TR7-V8, and a very large overdraft !
So we have tried to be fairly realistic by listing a range of modifications and conversions that gives you the choice of an even quicker, but mild mannered car, or the opportunity to produce a real hair-raising brute which could give you some 250/260 plus Bhp at the wheels (everything being equal of course), while still allowing the vehicle to be a usable Road Car.
These 'V8' Performance parts are in addition to the individual items listed in the 'General TR8 & V8 Conversion Parts' sections.

Our warranty does not cover any part or component if the vehicle is used in any form or type of Motor-Sport, IE; Racing/Rallying/Hill Climbing or any form of Timed or Speed Competition.
'If you want more power, but the prospect of stripping down your engine and then rebuilding it with performance parts is too daunting, then why not consider fitting one of our exchange modified full engines. We offer 3 types of uprated 3.5 litre full engines, the basic differences being in camshaft profile and type of cylinder heads fitted. To obtain the full benefit of these modifications you could also fit a Holley 390 carb/Offenhauser inlet manifold conversion kit, and tubular exhaust manifolds.
And if 3.5 litre's are not enough, we also offer 3.9 Litre engines, both standard and modified.
Reconditioned cylinder block, rebored with new pistons, new camshaft bearings, reground crankshaft, new main and big-end bearings. New camshaft and cam followers, new timing sprockets & chain, new oil pump, gears and oil pressure switch. Reconditioned cylinder heads have new valves, guides & springs.
Full engines (which are supplied less manifolds, water pump and other ancillaries), are sold on an exchange basis. The old unit must be a TR8/SD1 type, otherwise a surcharge will be applied.

If you want a significant increase in horsepower and low RPM torque, but wish to retain the characteristics and reliability of the standard 3.5 litre engine, then this is the conversion you have been looking for, because our 3.9 litre Full engines (both standard and uprated) are a direct replacement for the 3.5 unit.
For those people who wish to do their own modification it is relatively simple and inexpensive to convert a standard 3.5 litre (TR8/SD1) engine to a 3.9 litre engine - the cylinder block is bored out, liners are fitted with 94mm diameter pistons and the original 3.5 crankshaft and con-rods are retained.
When you have upgraded to a standard 3.9 engine you can increase the power-output even more by fitting (for example), modified heads, performance camshaft, Holley carb, tubular extractor manifolds etc as funds allow - giving you probably more power than a standard 4.2, 4.5, and possibly, a 5.0 litre engine.
Alternatively you can either purchase one of our standard 3.9 short engines (listed in this section) and build-up as you wish, or one of our full engines, choose either standard, or uprated - 'Mild', 'Fast' or 'Road/Rally' specification.

With the exception of the 3.9 pistons/liners and head gaskets, all other engine components are compatible with the 3.5 V8, so if you are considering purchasing a 3.9 short engine only, please refer to the sections here for performance parts or to the V8 ENGINE & CLUTCH section for standard components.
This conversion is not as straightforward as the 3.5 to 3.9, a long-throw crankshaft is required and the conversion is comparatively complex. We can supply (to special order) 4.2, 4.5 and 5.0 litre engines, with any combination of cylinder heads, camshaft etc, please phone for details and costs.

To obtain maximum benefit from your uprated engine we suggest you also consider fitting; A Lightened Flywheel (manual), Holley 390 Carb with Offenhauser Inlet Manifold, Tubular Extractor Manifolds with either a Twin or Single Stainless Steel Exhaust System, and an Engine Oil Cooler.
Our stage 1 and stage 2 modified cylinder heads are supplied in pairs, and should be used in conjunction with one of our performance camshafts/kits* in order to extract the full potential of the modifications, but the type of heads (and camshaft) to be fitted depends upon your requirements and the budget available. They can be used with Leaded or Super-unleaded fuel.
Our modified heads are fully reconditioned and fitted with new valves+, new shortened/shaped valve guides, uprated (double) valve springs and are 'gas-flowed/ported' as described. They are supplied less rocker pedestals, shafts & rocker arms, and are sold on an exchange basis. The old units must be TR8/SD1 type, otherwise a surcharge will be applied.
You can use our modified heads and/or perfor-mance camshafts when building up a 3.5 or 3.9 short engine, alternatively why not consider purchasing one of our modified full 3.5 or 3.9 litre full engines.

Fitting the Rover Vitesse inlet & exhaust valves in the standard TR8/SD1 cylinder head is an easy option because they are a direct replacement, they have the same valve head diameter as standard TR8/SD1 valves, but with a waisted stem they substantially improve gas flow in, and out of, the combustion chamber.
The Big-Valve option takes things a step further, offering larger head diameters (+0.062" for inlet and +0.044" for exhaust), although the valve seats will require machining to suit.

This carb/manifold conversion is recommended if you wish to improve the performance of your standard or modified 3.5/3.9 engine, fuel economy can also be improved depending on your driving style.
The latest carb/induction technology ensures even power throughout the rev range (without flat-spots) when the fuel efficient dual choke Holley carb is combined with the Offenhauser type inlet manifold, which has an equal flow plenum chamber allowing each cylinder to receive equal fuel/air.
NOTE; It is advisable to fit the Facet (high capacity) type fuel pump with this conversion to eliminate any possibility of fuel starvation. We also recom-mend that the Holley carb Electric Auto Choke is fed by a dedicated 12v power supply from the ignition switch - not from the +VE side of the coil.

K & N filters can be fitted directly onto SU carbs without modification, whereas air intake adaptors are required for Stromberg carbs (which could possibly be adapted from the early Range Rover).
NOTE; because the engine will run leaner with K & N filters, the carb needles will need to be changed.
