Which models were fitted with 3-rail gearboxes?
3-rail type gearboxes were fitted to ALL Spitfire Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 & MkIV models. However, because USA spec vehicles had the 1500cc engine some time before the UK and other export countries, it is possible that there are some re-imported '1500s' that have a 3-rail type gearbox.
How To Identify
3-rail type gearboxes can be identified by the 'overhanging' gear lever extension and by the input shaft which has 10 splines.
Clutch bellhousing uses a Scroll type front cover/seal.
3 Synchro Gearboxes
Original Spitfire Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 gearboxes only had synchromesh on 2nd 3rd & 4th gears, and had a square drive flange. Only 'D' type overdrive was fitted.
4 Synchro Gearboxes
Spitfire MkIV gearboxes had synchromesh on all four forward gears, and a round drive flange. 'D' & 'J' type overdrives were fitted.
Replacement Gearboxes
The specification of our replacement reconditioned gearboxes may vary from your original unit, due in part to the many changes introduced by the factory to improve and upgrade the 3-rail type gearbox.
Gearbox Rebuilds
Although Triumph 3-rail type gearboxes are not too complicated, unless you have some experience of transmission repairs they can be beyond the ability of the DIY enthusiast, so we recommend the fitting of an exchange gearbox.
However, we have listed and illustrated the gearbox components should you wish to rebuild your own gearbox.

All our Gearboxes/Overdrive units are supplied on a strict 'like for like' exchange basis. Your old exchange unit must be undamaged, drained of oil and be in a totally serviceable condition, before being returned to us for refund of exchange surcharges.
All gearboxes are supplied less the clutch bellhousing and overdrive adaptor plates. Refer to listings for details.
