Bench Testing
Apart from having a multitude of new parts & components fitted - and with a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty - our reconditioned engine units are run on a test bed after assembly.
During the test-run period (at varying engine speeds), all external joints and seals are checked and the water temperature and oil pressure are monitored to verify correct operation.
After the Bench Test all engines undergo a final inspection and are prepared for sale.
Note: All units are drained of oil and water before despatch.
All our full engines are assembled ready to accept manifolds, water pump and other ancillaries.
Important: You will need to retain your own sump pan as our full engines are only fitted with a 'protective transit' sump. Additional installation information and running-in details are supplied with every unit. We can also supply a 'Full Engine Installation Kit' that includes all necessary gaskets/oil filter etc, enabling you to install the full engine in your vehicle. Alternatively, fitting can be arranged locally in Lincoln if required, contact us for further details.

Full Engine Build-Up
When building up a full engine to a complete assembly, it is essential that every part that you intend to re-use is very thoroughly checked before you start assembly, any parts that are suspect should be replaced. The condition of the cooling system is crucial to ensure & maintain proper and efficient performance, with prolonged engine life. The water pump should be replaced if you are unsure, the radiator should be tested - professionally, and replaced if necessary (see Warranties). Unless your hoses are brand new, we strongly urge you to replace each and every one, including the heater hoses. The thermostat should be replaced as a matter of course, whilst the correct strength anti-freeze must be used. Carburettors should be in good working order with the mixture & balance set correctly. All engine & gearbox mountings, and the clutch operating system - should be checked and re-newed as required. Please familiarise yourself with the important running-in and cylinder head re-torquing instructions on the card we supply with every engine. If this card has become separated from the unit when you take delivery, please contact us.

Please Note: A new oil pump must be fitted (part no. GLP145, see warranty note below).
Oil pump, camshaft, cam followers & sprockets are not supplied with short engines.
Additional installation information & running-in details are supplied with every unit. Don't forget that we can supply all necessary gasket sets and components etc, required to build-up a short engine.
Warranty/Guarantee of short engines will become NULL & VOID if a new oil pump is not fitted.

MkIV Short Engine & Cylinder Block Identification
Recessed or Non-Recessed Cylinder Bores?
Early MkIV engines (to engine number FH25000E) have (as all previous Spitfires) Non-Recessed cylinder bores, and use a plain head gasket.
Late MkIV (from engine number FH25001E) and all 1500 engines have a Recessed Lip at the top of the cylinder bores adjacent to the block face, necessitating a particular type of head gasket, which can be identified by a small 'Tag' that stands proud at the rear of the block.
Short Engine Build-Up
When building up a short engine to a complete assembly, it is essential to thoroughly check the condition of every part you intend to re-use, especially the timing chain, chain tensioner, sprocket, valves, guides, camshaft etc, and replace if necessary. We supply all these parts separately if required, as well as gasket sets, oil seals, spigot bush, oil filter etc. Cylinder head face should be checked for flatness and flushed clean. The condition of the cooling system is crucial to ensure & maintain proper and efficient performance, with prolonged engine life. The water pump should be replaced if you are unsure, the radiator should be tested - professionally, and replaced if necessary. Unless your hoses are brand new, we strongly urge you to replace each and every one, including the heater hoses. The thermostat should be replaced as a matter of course, whilst the correct strength anti-freeze must be used. Carburettors should be in good working order with the mixture and balance set correctly. All engine and gearbox mountings, and the clutch operating system - should be checked and re-newed as required. Please familiarise yourself with the important running-in and cylinder head re-torquing instructions on the card we supply with every engine. If this card has become separated from the unit when you take delivery, please contact us.

Camshaft Bearings & Cylinder Blocks
ORIGINAL BLOCK SPECIFICATION Mk1 camshafts ran directly in the cylinder block, as did early Mk2’s up to engine number FC61022. Cylinder blocks for Mk2’s (from FC61023), all Mk3’s, and early MkIV’s (to FH25000E), had enlarged drillings in the cylinder block to accept replaceable camshaft bearings (part No RL1495), though the camshaft journals remained the same diameter. Late MkIV (from FH25001E) and all 1500’s had revised cylinder blocks allowing the camshaft to run directly in the block without the use of bearings. REPLACEMENT BLOCKS/CAMSHAFTS If your engine is tired, and you are unsure as to the pedigree of the cylinder block, why not play safe and fit one of our short or full engines.

Crankshaft & Flywheel

1500 Crankshaft & Flywheel
Some early Spitfire 1500’s (Definitely USA models, possibly some UK) were originally fitted - at the factory, with crankshafts & flywheels that used 3/8” fixing bolts. (3/8” bolt part number 138526). All later models had larger holes & drillings (flywheels & crankshafts) to accept 7/16” bolts. (7/16” bolt part number UKC4254). What crankshaft fits with what flywheel ? Early type flywheels (TKC1186) with 3/8” diameter bolt holes CAN be fitted to crankshafts that have 7/16” drillings by carefully ‘centre drilling out’ the 4 holes to 7/16” and using 4 later type bolts UKC4254. Later type flywheels (TKC1840) with 7/16” diameter bolt holes CAN be fitted to crankshafts that have 3/8” drillings by using one of our Bolt/Bush adaptor kits (RL1512), which include 4 (3/8”) fixing bolts, and 4 machined bushes (60070). Both early & late flywheels use the same locating dowels.

Camshaft Bearings & Cylinder Blocks
Original Block Specification Mk1 camshafts ran directly in the cylinder block, as did early Mk2’s up to engine number FC61022. Cylinder blocks for Mk2’s (from FC61023), all Mk3’s and early MkIV’s (to FH25000E), had enlarged drillings in the cylinder block to accept replaceable camshaft bearings (part No RL1495), though the camshaft journals remained the same diameter.

Silicone - DOT 5 Brake & Clutch Fluid
The Facts
Automec Silicone Brake Fluid (SBF) meets the USA Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No 116 for DOT5 brake fluid, which has now been adopted by the UK & Europe. Silicone fluid is used in the same way as normal brake fluid. Drain the system, fill with Silicone and bleed in accordance with the vehicle manufacturers instructions.
Initially the brake fluid remains purple, then after a while it changes to yellow. The colour change is quite normal and does not affect the performance of the fluid.
Because Silicone fluid is non-hygroscopic (it absorbs less than 1% by weight of moisture), corrosion in the system is virtually eliminated, while at the same time the boiling point (important under emergency braking conditions) remains very high at around 260 Centigrade (500F) unlike normal fluids that can be as low as 170C.
SBF is non-toxic, virtually inert (it is not glycol based) and is environmentally friendly.
All this means that it wont harm you, your cars braking components, or the paintwork and because you don’t have to drain the system (unlike normal glycol based fluids), it doesn’t harm the environment.
If Automec Silicone Brake Fluid becomes mixed with normal glycol fluid, they will work safely, as they both have to if they are to be classified as D.O.T fluids.
