Which models were fitted with single-rail gearboxes?
Single-rail all synchromesh type gearboxes were fitted to ALL UK spec Spitfire 1500s. However, because USA spec vehicles had the 1500cc engine some time before the UK and other export countries, it is possible that there are some re-imported '1500s' that have a 3-rail type gearbox.
How To Identify
Single-rail type gearboxes can be identified by the integral gear lever extension/rear casing and by the input shaft which has 20 splines.
Early clutch bellhousing (to gearbox FR33414) used a scroll type oil seal. Late models (from FR33415) used a rubber oil seal.
Scroll or Rubber Oil Seal?
You must check (before ordering) to verify if the front seal (located in the bellhousing) is a scroll or rubber type oil seal.
4 Synchro Gearboxes
Spitfire 1500 gearboxes had synchromesh on all four forward gears, and a round drive flange.
Only 'J' type overdrive was fitted.
Replacement Gearboxes
The specification of our replacement reconditioned gearboxes may vary from your original unit, due in part to the many changes introduced by the factory to improve and upgrade the single-rail type gearbox.
Gearbox Rebuilds
Although Triumph single-rail type gearboxes are not too complicated, unless you have some experience of transmission repairs they can be beyond the ability of the DIY enthusiast, so we recommend the fitting of an exchange gearbox.
However, we have listed and illustrated the gearbox components should you wish to rebuild your own gearbox.
Important
All our Gearboxes/Overdrive units are supplied on a strict 'like for like' exchange basis. Your old exchange unit must be undamaged, drained of oil and be in a totally serviceable condition, before being returned to us for refund of exchange surcharges.
All gearboxes are supplied less the clutch bellhousing and overdrive adaptor plates. Refer to listings for details.

Gearbox Only - Non-Overdrive Type
Reconditioned exchange units are supplied less clutch bellhousing, speedo pinion/housing, reverse light switch, gear lever and the 3 front lower tension springs which fit between the casing and bellhousing.

Re-Fitting the Bellhousing Important points to note when re-fitting the clutch bellhousing to the gearbox. 1) Ensure the 3 tension springs (137532) that locate the countershaft, are correctly inserted in the front lower section of the gearbox case. 2) Correct length bolts/setscrews MUST be used, if too long, fouling will occur with the gearbox internals.
