Reconditioned Exchange Engines
If you opt for an exchange engine in preference to a home rebuild, you must establish which exact type of TR6 engine (and at what state of assembly) you will have to order from us. Alternatively we can of course recondition your existing engine if required.
A reconditioned exchange TR6 engine is supplied 'off the shelf' as either a 'full engine' or 'short engine' (i.e. minus cylinder head), to one of five specifications (for Pi cars), depending on the crankshaft, cylinder block and camshaft combination in your old unit. Genuine TR6 PI engines were numbered with CP or CR prefixes and a suffix of HE. The prefix is the same as the chassis (commission) number, whereas the suffix 'H' is for high compression and 'E' is for engine number (as opposed to a chassis number). For North American spec/Carburettor Engines, please refer to the NAS section.
Please see Engine - Internal for the explanations about crankshaft and camshaft terminology. An explanation of the cylinder block descriptions follows item 7 below.
Old units returned to us under the exchange scheme should be drained of oil and externally clean with no irreparable damage (like a hole in the block). Talk to us to determine exactly what should be returned as an old unit. For example, you will have to remove the water pump, inlet and exhaust manifolds, distributor, starter motor, sparking plugs, oil filter, rocker cover, flywheel, rear engine mounting plate, sump, front crankshaft pulley, vibration damper, thermostat and housing from your old engine.

All engines are bench tested and are suitable for both unleaded and leaded fuels. Fuel injection cars also require Bosch fuel pump and modified metering unit for unleaded application.
Our reconditioned Full Engines for the TR6 have one of the highest rebuild specifications available. Apart from having a multiple of new parts and components fitted - and with a 12 Month / 12,000 Mile Warranty - they are run on a test bed after assembly.
During the test-run period (at varying engine speeds), all external joints and seals are checked, and the water temperature and oil pressure monitored to verify correct operation. After the bench test, the engines undergo a final inspection and are prepared for sale.
NOTE: All units are drained of oil/water before despatch.
Installation information and running-in details are supplied with every unit. We can also supply a 'Full Engine Build-Up Kit' that includes all necessary gaskets, oil, filter etc, enabling you to install the full engine in your vehicle. Alternatively, fitting can be arranged locally in Lincoln if required, at modest cost.

NOTE: A cylinder block is supplied complete with fitted main bearing caps, as they are individually matched during production machining. The two types of cylinder block on TR6 PI models are identified by the lack of, or presence of, a recess machined into the top of each cylinder bore (hence 'flat top' or 'recessed top' blocks). The extra machining, on later cylinder blocks, was to improve head gasket sealing. A change of cylinder head gasket design coincided with this modification. The correct head gasket to match the cylinder block must be used, or premature gasket failure may be encountered. The later head gasket has raised metal circular rings around each cylinder bore, designed to locate in the recesses cut into the top surface of the cylinder block. This gasket can also be identified by a tag that protrudes beyond the back of the block and has the word 'TOP' printed into it.

It's not just during the winter that you need protection for your engine and radiator. The inclusion of the glycol based Anti-Freeze not only stops the water from freezing up during the winter - at least blowing a hose or radiator core, or allowing the engine to run without adequate water until something nasty happens.
During the summer the liquid acts as a coolant by removing the heat more efficiently from the block and dispersing it even in the worst traffic jam. It also protects from corrosion damage.

The installation of a '150 bhp' camshaft in place of a '125 bhp' item does not give an instant performance increase. Other items such as the cylinder head, metering unit and the distributor must be replaced and/or adjusted.

Our reconditioned exchange cylinder head assemblies are suitable for running both unleaded or leaded fuels. Note that injection cars also require Bosch fuel pump and modified metering unit for unleaded application.
