Front Disc Brakes & Fittings


Early Mk1 Spitfires (to FC15219) used a separate mounting plate to locate the caliper to the vertical link, with the corresponding steering arm lever & stub axle.
(This caliper mounting system was originally used to convert early Herald 1200 & 12/50s from drum to disc).
This assembly was less than ideal, and at FC15220, all Mk1s were produced with modified vertical links that allowed the caliper to mount directly (discarding the separate mounting plate), along with a revised steering arm lever and a strengthened stub axle.
Please check the type of caliper fitted.

Imperial & Metric Fittings
Imperial Fittings Imperial brake hydraulics and fittings were used on all Spitfire models (whether single or dual-line systems) up to, and including, the Spitfire 1500 (to chassis numbers FH80,000 for export & FH130,000 for the UK). Metric with Imperial Fittings On the Spitfire 1500 only, from FH80,000 (export) and FH130,000 (UK), a curious mixture of Metric & Imperial brake hydraulics and fittings was introduced. The brake Master cylinder and the PDWA valve had metric threads, as did the 2 connecting pipes. However, the 2 pipes that 'exited' from the valve had metric threads, but where they connected to the 3-way brake junction (front circuit), and the double male connector for the rear hydraulic circuit, the threads were imperial. All other brake hydraulic parts used imperial threads.

Imperial Fittings Imperial brake hydraulics and fittings were used on all Spitfire models (whether single or dual-line systems) up to, and including, the Spitfire 1500 (to chassis numbers FH80,000 for export & FH130,000 for the UK). Metric with Imperial Fittings On the Spitfire 1500 only, from FH80,000 (export) and FH130,000 (UK), a curious mixture of Metric & Imperial brake hydraulics and fittings was introduced. The brake Master cylinder and the PDWA valve had metric threads, as did the 2 connecting pipes. Automec Silicone Brake Fluid (SBF) meets the USA Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No 116 for DOT5 brake fluid, which has now been adopted by the UK & Europe. Silicone fluid is used in the same way as normal brake fluid. Drain the system, fill with Silicone and bleed in accordance with the vehicle manufacturers instructions. Initially the brake fluid remains purple, then after a while it changes to yellow. The colour change is quite normal and does not affect the performance of the fluid. Because Silicone fluid is non-hygroscopic (it absorbs less than 1% by weight of moisture), corrosion in the system is virtually eliminated, while at the same time the boiling point (important under emergency braking conditions) remains very high at around 260 Centigrade (500f) unlike normal fluids that can be as low as 170c. SBF is non-toxic, virtually inert (it is not glycol based) and is environmentally friendly. All this means that it won't harm you, your cars braking components, or the paintwork and because you don't have to drain the system (unlike normal glycol based fluids), it doesn't harm the environment. If Automec Silicone Brake Fluid becomes mixed with normal glycol fluid, they will work safely, as they both have to if they are to be classified as D.O.T fluids.
