'HS2' (1 1/4") Carburettors
SU Carburettors Overhaul & Identification
It is quite straightforward (with the help of a workshop manual) to service and overhaul your carburettors using the service items listed in this section. Both fuel economy and performance can suffer through lack of carb maintenance and with the tightening of the MOT regulations regarding 'Exhaust Emissions', it is important that they are maintained in good working order. Incorrectly adjusted or worn carbs can also cause premature engine wear because fuel that remains in the cylinders causes 'bore-wash', which eventually glazes the bores, resulting in excessive oil consumption. We can recondition your own SU carburettors, or we can supply reconditioned units - on a strict exchange basis.
The listings here however are primarily for identification purposes only. They will also show if you have the correct type of carb fitted (part numbers/engine numbers are quoted to help identify original factory specification, and relate to carb's fitted when the vehicle was new and not subsequent replacements). To check, the carbs can be positively identified by a part number marked on a silver tag which is located on the float chamber.

The 'open crankcase' system used on the MK1 was replaced with a 'Closed Circuit' breather system - due primarily to the emergence of Engine Emission Controls. The oil filler cap was no longer used to ventilate the crankcase. A rubber hose exiting from the side of the rocker cover allowed engine fumes to be sucked back into the air filter box for re-burning in the combustion chambers.

Although the system used on the Mk2 was a vast improvement, the air filters tended to get clogged with oil fumes. To overcome this problem Mk3's were fitted with a 'Closed Circuit Engine Breather' where the hose from the rocker cover now connected to a Smiths Emission Control Valve - fitted in the inlet manifold, which regulated the engine fumes back in to the combustion chambers. A 2 piece oil filler cap was fitted that allowed air into the engine to prevent a vacuum forming.

The system changed yet again on the MkIV. The Emission Control Valve was discarded, the hose from the rocker cover now connected directly to the carbs via a 'T' piece connector.
