Metering Units

Much has been written about the benefits and filings of the petrol injection system made by Lucas that was fitted to Triumph TR6 models. Few spares to assist the home repairer are available. The only major option is an exchange rebuilt unit, in the event of your own going wrong through normal wear and tear or internal failure. Units returned for exchange must be complete and serviceable or a surcharge will be levied until an acceptable item is received. (See illustration for acceptable condition.)
A standard metering unit is not suitable for unleaded fuel. All metering units supplied by Rimmer Bros are suitable for use with unleaded or leaded fuel.

Injectors

There are three different types of injectors and one of these is not serviceable (see illustration). If you find yourself in possession of the type that cannot be reconditioned please try to obtain one which can be for exchange purposes. The two serviceable types are identifiable by a wire 'C' clip fitted to the nozzle end of the injector. The non-serviceable type has the nozzle end held into the body by crimping. All injectors, after installation need to be 'bled' to expel any air from them. This will ensure that they work satisfactorily. If any of the fuel lines to the injectors is disconnected, they too will need 'bleeding' to purge them of air.
If your engine starts on less than 6 cylinders, the fault may be traced to either numbers 2 or 5 fuel injector. Often the misfiring of one of these two cylinders is caused by a faulty banjo bolt (part no. 518630), not a failed injector. Substitution of another injector that is know to be working will pin point these banjo bolts that include a non return valve, to be at fault.

Pressure Relief Valves

All units are calibrated to give 105 - 110 psi which is the correct working fuel pressure for these Lucas injection systems. Early TR6 models (to body no. 51887CP) had a short (3/8") valve. All later TR6's had a longer (1 1/4") valve. They are interchangeable. The design change was adopted to help stop valve body distortion and subsequent relief valve pressure fluctuations. For further information on setting the pressure relief valve, please refer to the workshop manual.

Lucas Fuel Pump

This unit was not a wonderfully designed piece of engineering. It is based on a windscreen wiper motor and is required to operate continuously at a much higher speed. The increase raises its running temperature to a point where, in high ambient temperatures it is likely to vaporise the fuel as it enters the pump housing. The incoming fuel then takes on the role of a coolant for the pump. If the fuel temperature is raised too high it will vaporise. The pump has no resistance when pumping fuel so the motor overspeeds; this is the wailing tone the pump makes as the engine stops working. Keeping the pump cool and subsequently the fuel within it, is of primary importance. The solution is a cooling coil that fits around the petrol pump motor. It carries diverted spilt fuel from the pressure relief valve around the pump motor before returning it to the petrol tank. The fitment of a petrol pump cooling coil is strongly recommended.
The Lucas pump is not compatible with unleaded fuels and must be run with a suitable fuel additive. Should Lucas pumps become available - suitable for unleaded fuel, refer to Price Guide (or our sales office) and suffixed part number.
An alternative to the Lucas pump / cooling coil combination is the Bosch type replacement pump. This is of more modern design and extremely reliable if installed correctly (it’s also a lot quieter and compatible with unleaded fuels.) See below for further details.

Bosch Replacement Fuel Pump

The Bosch pump is an ideal replacement for the notoriously unreliable Lucas unit. It is installed in the same position and can be easily piped in and wired following the instructions supplied. The quiet operation and suitability for both leaded and unleaded fuel make it an ideal choice for any PI car.
